Drupal Boot Camp

Dan, Aaron, and I have been talking about sponsoring/organizing a crash course on Drupal for experienced PHP programmers. There is a big demand for folks that know Drupal well, and it seems like a worthy investment of time and attention. Has anyone done anything like this before that we could learn from? Are there any courses that are currently being offered?

I'm a professor at the University of Michigan School of Information. I'm putting together a proposal for curriculum around content management systems (probably with Drupal as the key tool, though Plone is in the running).

Universities work a little slower than the open source world-- I'm proposing courses for January 2007. And my audience is actually going to include people with less programming background, but knowledge of usability, social psychology, the relationship between organizations and social collections, etc.

But if you get something going in a quicker time frame, I'd like to help in some way if I can, and make use of what you create.

There was alot of talk about curriculum development at DrupalCon OSCMS-Summit in Vancouver. There are some forum posts that touch on the issue here http://drupal.org/node/50060 and here http://drupal.org/node/49098

Josh K from Trellon and Zack Rosen from CivicSpaceLabs are talking about organizing some intensive trainings in May. I have talked to them about coordinating them to piggyback on the Net Squared conference in San Francisco and the Personal Democracy Forum conference in New York.

I think you are right on about the need to get people in a room and learn from someone with experience. One or two day intensive sessions on theming and standard deployment and on module development are desparately needed. At the recent Drupal Developer Meeting in New York, about half the folks there said they would attend training sessions.

Having trainings is aligned with the concepts of Drupal Guild and with the Drupal Pros concept that is growing out of it.

Paul, this is very exciting news about your courses. Thanks for your offer to assist. We are moving on a faster track but will certainly keep you in the loop on our progress and enlist your support along the way.
