Agile for Everything - We're Not The Only Ones
At CivicActions we've seen the power of Scrum and other Agile practices in our client facing teams. We decided a while ago that we wanted some of that for the rest of our organization. We want to be focused on the right priorities at the right time and to be sprinting as a system. We want to be collaborating with our internal and external customers and thinking from their point of view. We want to uncover frequently occurring impediments and frustrations so that we can address the systemic issues that are causing them.
So, we dove in and started applying Agile practices to everything that we do - from Marketing & Business Development to Finance & Admin. As we ran into challenges, I started looking around to see if anyone else was doing similar things.
I have been continually delighted to learn that many many people are discussing why traditional top-down, hierarchical, bureaucratic management doesn't work in today's world and how we might do things differently.
A list of some of the centers of discussion that I have found so far:
- MiX (Management Information eXchange - its time to reinvent management. You can help.
- Stoos Network - facilitating a tipping point
- Steve Denning - Radical Management: Rethinking leadership and innovation
- Seth Godin, Stop Stealing Dreams - on what schools should be doing to prepare students for tomorrow
Are we at the genesis of the new way of working? It feels new to me and I'm excited to be part of the conversation!
