DrupalCamp Vancouver Success
DrupalCamps help bring out creativity. This weekend I attended Vancouver's DrupalCamp, and I really enjoyed myself. On top of it, I am always amazed by talking with others at these types of events. Other developers who I think really know their stuff said to me, "The camps are great. They remind of how much more I need to learn." I thought they knew it all! It just goes to show that no matter your experience you will always learn something new at a DrupalCamp. On top of it, the community is so open and friendly. You can't help yourself. You leave with a smile on your face and a brain full of ideas and inspiration (and maybe a little tired out).
Some of my favorite talks include:
- Katherine Bailey's talk about jQuery for module developers
- Gregory Heller's talk about Panels 2
- Scott Hagfield talk about SimpleTest
- Greg Dunlap's talk about the Deploy module
I had a chance to give a talk introducing module development. I think my talk went pretty well, but I have some adjustments to make. It's highly likely I'll be giving this talk again at the Seattle DrupalCamp. At a minimum, it will focus on module development in Drupal 6, and I want to add a higher level introduction that explains differences between contributing to core vs. contributed modules vs. custom modules plus some real world examples. And seriously, I need to get some lolcats in there!
As much as I enjoy the talks, the time between talks is valuable as well. It's a chance to chat with old friends and meet new ones. It's a great way to learn some tips or to make connections for future work like the upcoming DrupalCamp in Seattle or ideas for future sprints. It really gets the juices flowing! Next time you have an opportunity to attend a camp, why not give it a try?
