Happy Birthday to the International Declaration of Human Rights, and to the new Amnesty International site in Drupal

Today, December 10, 2007, marks two important birthdays:

It is the 60th birthday of the International Declaration of Human Rights. This important document, ratified by the United Nations in 1948, established the view of the General Assembly of the human rights that should be guaranteed to all people. This document, part of the triumphant triumvirate that also includes the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, is the cornerstone of the codes of international law that are enforced by human rights organizations all over the world.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is the most translated document in the world.

The second important birthday we are celebrating today at CivicActions is the long awaited launch of Amnesty.org. This new site, built in Drupal and using CiviCRM, was nearly 6 months in development, appears in 4 languages (English, French, Arabic, and Spanish), has a theme that works in right-to-left as well as left-to-right languages, and boasts a high level of accessibility.

We are proud to announce the launch of this site, which provides the Amnesty International Secretariat with a new set of tools, an open source CMS, and most importantly, a scalable and community-supported foundation to build upon into the future.

Happy Birthday!!

Last month we also launched The Witness Video Hub.

The Hub is an interactive community for human rights, where you can upload videos, audio or photos, or simply watch, comment on and share what’s on the site. You can use each media item on the site to encourage individuals to learn more and to get involved by providing direct links to resources, advocacy groups, campaigns and actions that they can take to make a difference. Additionally, you can connect with groups or create one of your own to feature your work on the Hub. Every week you can watch the three most urgent videos contributed to the Hub, and hand-picked by our editors.
