CivicActions Turns 3 Years Old

On July 20th, 2004, while working on several projects with Dan Robinson and Aaron Pava (as independents), CivicActions LLC was formally incorporated. The three of us had decided to join together to provide technology consulting services for progressive organizations using Free and Open Source technologies. Since that time, we have grown. We now have 9 partners in the firm, and over 27 consultants in 6 time zones. We have remained a virtual organization. New Clients in 2004

Executive Order: Blocking Property of Certain Persons Who Threaten Stabilization Efforts in Iraq

If there are any attorneys reading this - Did Bush's July 17, executive order just criminalize the anti-war movement in the US, giving the president the power to clean out our bank accounts? Would taking our money require a court ruling by our peers? Would releasing my code - enabling later use by others who I do not know make me a criminal and subject to the order? There seems to be little mainstream news coverage of this. Perhaps you should ask some questions about this. Here are a few articles:

Insights on YouTube Scalability

Aaron just emailed me a link to this blog post about how YouTube kept up with growth from 30 million to 100 million page views per day in 4 months - "sometimes the videos are cached way out on the “edge” of the network (their caches, and other people’s caches)". Kudos for Google for sharing some of their secrets.

A Dark Day for the United States

Our Supreme Court ended it's term today, and closed it's doors on our people. Tomorrow, many school districts across our country will be faced with uncertainty...and our children will no longer be given the same opportunity to experience diversity. This is a real shame. A few quotes from Justice Breyer's Dissent today on the racial integration case:

CivicActions Begins Amnesty International Sprints

Two months ago, we were honored to be considered (along with Development Seed), as one of the two finalists to take on a series of sprints for the development of the new Amnesty International site. In late May, we were informed that we had been awarded the engagement. Two weeks ago in London, Ken Jordan, Jacob Singh, and I met with the Amnesty team for a 2 day engagement kick-off. We are on track to present the results of our first sprint in early July.

Will Microsoft Vouchers Provide Free License to Thier Patents?

According to Todd Bishop of Seattle PI, who broke the story, SUSE vouchers have no expiration date. Groklaw claims that this legal oversight looks to be the wooden stake in the Novell-Micorosoft patent peace agreement. Groklaw quotes Eben Moglen:

May 19th - the day Abbot sets you free

The revolutionaries who founded the United States wrote in the Declaration of Independence that we were declaring independence, in large part because we had "certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." The point was that no government needed to grant these rights. They are endowed by our Creator. Our government - and any government in our image - shouldn't have the power to take away these Rights.
