Money as Debt
Submitted by fen on April 30, 2007 - 10:58pm.
In the wake of having our mortgage approved (today - yea!) a friend (?) sent me a movie that graphically shows how we just contributed to the economy by putting ourselves in debt.

There's nothing in this that is new, but it's frightening to see it presented so clearly. Some key concepts:
- The only value that exists in the United States today is the promise to repay a debt.
- Banks do not lend money; they create it from debt. If there was no debt, there would be no money.
- More and more stuff has to go from natural resources to garbage each year to keep the system going.
I have long pushed for electoral and campaign finance reform, but I fear that monetary reform - something I have never really thought ofe before - may be far more important. Please check out the video above and see if you agree.
