Today The Free Software Foundation and CivicActions launched the
Campaign in Seattle at the Microsoft WinHEC conference.

We had a great time with about 20 local Free Software and privacy advocates. We all dressed up in hazmat suits and handed out leaflets warning of the dangers of DRM to attendees of theWinHEC2006 conference.

If this is the kind of think that you think is important, blog about it, Digg it, delicious tag it, simpy tag it, etc,
etc. If you know other folks who would be interested in writing about
it, feel free to send them my way. We are going to do more events like
this around the country, as well as other types of direct action and PR.

Now go to DefectiveByDesign.org and sign up for the campaign.

Not that I have had much time to reflect... Been uploading pictures, and video, and working on the website... But wanted to add a few thoughts about the action.

Nearly all of the folks who responded to our emails over the last few days showed up. We did not release any details about the action other than the general time and the date (and that it was going to be in Downtown Seattle) until Monday.

Nearly everyone dressed up.

The public was very receptive to us. Even Microsoft employees, with the exception of one who asked "Your against DRM, so you don't want DVDs?" Yes apparently according to this microsoft employee, DVDs cannot exist with DRM...

I was pretty surprised that folks were not at all alarmed by the site of 18 people in bright green and yellow hazmat suits.

The Convention Center Security and the one Seattle Police Officer (on a bike) were also very pleasant and just asked us not to block the entrance or the sidewalk.

Lastly, in my 10 years of political activism and leafleting, I have never had so many people so willingly take the fliers I am pushing.

The folks that came out to participate were great, really enthusiastic (for 8am in the morning!), and knowledgeable about the issues.
