Ian Rhett speaking at the 2011 Nonprofit Technology Conference

Relevance + Networking + Speed = Impact

I'm incredibly inspired by the worlds of Vikki Sprull in her remarks to the Council on Foundations in San Jose this week.  She points out that being agile in the face of rapid change is the future of philanthropy, and we couldn't agree more.  I especially love her re-framing of the Council of Foundations as a hub in a network, rather than as a terminus.  This is the right kind of thinking for the networked age in which we find ourselves living.

Last week I participated in the Ignite reception at the NTEN Nonprofit Technology Conference in Washington, DC. Ignite is a unique format in which the presenters have just 5 minutes to "enlighten" the audience using exactly 20 slides which auto-rotate every 15 seconds.

Last Thursday I attended a taping of the Al Jazeera English show, "Empire" at the Columbia University Journalism School. The discussion featured Amy Goodman, Carl Bernstein, Emily Bell, and rivals Clay Shirky and Evgeny Morozov. While the role of technology was the launching point of the discussion; it was not limited to a narrow review of the uses of Facebook and Twitter. Here are a couple of important takeaways from the event:

Code for America Seeking 2011 Fellows

No, Code for America isn't looking for a couple thousand gentlemen.  They're looking for geeks (of any gender) to award yearlong Fellowships (living wage, health insurance, travel expenses) starting in 2011 to build Government 2.0 apps for a number of local governments.

Miley Quits Twitter - Tweetfree Tweens And The Future of Social Media

Miley Cyrus closed her account and quit Twitter with an apparent DIY Youtube rap video called "Goodbye Twitter," wherein she oh-so-eloquently extolls the value of quality in-person time over endlessly updating a stream of personal trivia as the reason for leaving the service. Does Miley's move foreshadow the complete abandonment of social media for tweens and teens?

A New Event: Drupal Summit

In Seattle, our local Drupal User Group is organizing a Drupal conference called the Pacific Northwest Drupal Summit.  This event includes technical and business oriented talks.  It's going to be a great time, and I recommend signing up now before it fills up.

We are limited to 150 people, and we already have about 50 people signed up.
